What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback training is a treatment for brain health. It is very popular across North American and Europe and has helped thousands of people get back into health without medication.

Neurofeedback is a kind of biofeedback. Neurofeedback is a treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health problems and does not involve medication.  Biofeedback uses the following three components:

  • An instrument detects a specific biological activity
  • A trainee is reinforced with graphics or tones the moment that activity manifests
  • Regulation of that (desireable) activity results

Neurofeedback is the type of biofeedback that relates to brain functioning. Sensors (electrodes) are placed on the scalp to record electricity (brainwaves). The equipment only records your brainwaves it does not add electric current. Sophisticated computer software shows how the brain is functioning from this recorded EEG.  The book Getting Started with Neurofeedback describes the process as being “orchestrated by the therapist and played out by the client.”

Reinforcement of the “good” brain activity is either a sound or computer visual or sometimes a movie playing.  Amazingly, after just a few reinforcing auditory beeps or signals, the brain responds by adjusting brain wave patterns.  Also, if adequate training has been delivered then the client can reproduce healthy brain wave patterns without the use of equipment.   Neurofeedback is an exciting training technique that often leads to symptom reduction and peak performance-without the use of medication.
